Fonality was founded in 2003 and developed its PBXtra™ product line (using an Asterisk-based PBX solution based platform) while working to build a multi-line telephone system that could support its own growing business needs. Shocked, like many other business owners, by the prices they were finding for a basic PBX telephone system, they decided to build their own. The founders were so impressed by the product they had developed that they decided to create and market an affordable IP-PBX telephone system for small and medium-sized business throughout the world.
Fonality’s PBXtra™ product line is built using the Asterisk-based PBX system platform. For those not familiar with the open source Asterisk software, it is itself a complete PBX system. The Asterisk-based PBX solution offered Fonality software engineers and programmers the ability to build upon the system’s existing functions, run VoIP in many protocols and interoperate with most standards-based telephony equipment using relatively inexpensive hardware. What more could we ask for!
Fonality took an incredible PBX system and transformed it into a phenomenal telephone system. The team at Fonality programmed over 110,000 lines of additional code which was added to the open source software platform and unveiled PBXtra™ in October 2004. The result of our efforts allowed us to provide small and medium-sized businesses with a full-featured IP-PBX telephone system at an affordable price. For just around the $3,000 a business can own an enterprise-class PBX phone system that supports ten telephones and is VoIP-enabled.
The use of Asterisk open srouce software also enabled the Fonality team to build a highly intuitive graphical user interface that makes PBXtra™ telephone systems that are incredibly easy to use. The need for an onsite administrator is essentially eliminated because of what Fonality’s team was able to do using the Asterisk-based PBX system. The system uses an Application Service Provider (ASP) which makes the PBXtra™ control panel available to users and the administrator from any location via the Internet. Imagine being able to make changes and additions to your telephone system 24 hours a day from any where in the world. PBXtra™ allows you to do that and more. The ASP administrative interface creates a standalone system that removes the need to open up your Company’s firewall, have a web server running inside your business and hire an IT manager.
